Q1: Can I recover refrigerant from a system with the MalcoEdge Colt Vacuum Pump?
A1: We do not recommend using a vacuum pump for recovery.
Q2: How do microns compare to PSI?
A2: 1 micron of mercury equals 0.000019337 PSIG. For reference, if you get under 500 microns you are dealing with a deep vacuum.
Q3: What are the differences between a recovery machine and a vacuum pump?
A3: A MalcoEdge Recovery Machine removes liquid refrigerants, moisture, and vapor from a system that has previously been charged prior to service. It does not typically draw a system into a deep vacuum. A MalcoEdge Vacuum Pump, on the other hand, removes any remaining vapor and draws the system down into a deep vacuum. A vacuum pump is also used to perform a decay test.
Q4: What does “BL” stand for on MalcoEdge Vacuum Pumps?
A4: BL stands for Brushless motor. Brushless motors are also sparkless, making them safer to use around refrigerants.
Q5: What micron level should I draw my HVAC system down to?
A5: We recommend referring to the equipment manufacturer for the target vacuum range. Some MalcoEdge vacuum pumps can pull systems down to 15 microns, but many manufacturers recommend a minimum of 300 or 500 microns.
Q6: What happens if the power goes out while I am pulling a vacuum?
A6: MalcoEdge Vacuum Pumps have a solenoid valve that seals off the system if there is a loss of power. When power is restored, the valve will automatically release and the pump will continue running to draw the system into a deeper vacuum.
Q7: How often should I replace my vacuum pump oil?
A7: We recommend changing your oil every time you draw down a system or whenever the oil appears dirty. MalcoEdge oil is available in 1-quart or 1-gallon packages.
Q8: I am having difficulty reaching peak vacuum. What should I check first?
A8: Check your oil first. Dirty oil will limit the vacuum your pump can achieve.
Q9: Do you offer a quick-change oil system for MalcoEdge vacuum pumps?
A9: No, a quick-change oil system is not currently offered.
Q10: Do you offer pre-measured vacuum pump oil?
A10: MalcoEdge oil is available in 1-quart or 1-gallon packages. It is not offered pre-measured.

Q15: Do I need to flush and clean my equipment when switching between refrigerants?
A15: Yes. Some refrigerants use different lubricants and cannot be mixed. As a best practice, flush pumps, hoses, manifolds, and other components between services to prevent cross-contamination. We recommend using ACE Powerflush when switching refrigerants.
Q16: What run time can I expect on various battery sizes?
A16: The Colt Vacuum Pump will typically run for about an hour on a 5Ah battery, or just under 2 hours on a 9Ah battery.
