To better understand where the industry is headed, we sat down with Andy Knutson, Category Director of Tools at The Malco Group. Andy shared his perspective on the challenges HVACR and building construction professionals are facing, the trends shaping the future of the trades, and how innovation in tools continues to drive productivity and performance in the field.

What originally drew you to tools that support the trade?
Andy: I’ve had a deep appreciation for the skilled trades and the pride that comes from creating something with your hands. Working on side projects over the years has reinforced how important it is to have the right tools to deliver high-quality results. I’ve been drawn to the blend of craftsmanship and practical problem-solving that great tools bring to the trades, and that’s what sparked my interest in this industry.
How has feedback from technicians in the field shaped the way you approach product development?
Andy: Technician feedback is one of the most valuable inputs we have. The people who use our products every day understand the challenges and demands of the job better than anyone else. Listening to their experiences helps us identify opportunities to improve functionality, durability, and ease of use. Ultimately, our goal is to create solutions that solve real-world problems.
What excites you most about joining The Malco Group and leading the strategy and growth of the tool category?
Andy: What excites me most is the opportunity to work with brands and products that have earned the trust of trade professionals over generations. Malco has a strong reputation for building tools that solve real problems on the jobsite, and that’s something I’m passionate about.
The trades are constantly evolving, creating many opportunities to listen to customers, understand their challenges, and develop solutions that help them work faster, safer, and more efficiently. I’m excited to be part of a team that’s focused on innovation, grounded in customers’ needs, and committed to building on an already strong legacy.
Where do you see the biggest opportunities today to improve tools and solutions for technicians in the field?
Andy: I believe some of the biggest opportunities lie in increasing productivity, improving ergonomics, and simplifying workflow tasks. Technicians are being asked to do more with less time, so products that save steps, reduce fatigue, and enhance jobsite efficiency can make a meaningful difference. As labor shortages continue and experienced technicians become harder to replace, solutions that help users work smarter and more efficiently will be increasingly important.
Outside of work, what’s something you’re passionate about or enjoy doing in your spare time?
Andy: Spending time with family and staying involved in sports. I enjoy coaching my boys’ sports teams and staying active whenever I can. I still play competitive soccer, although I’ve learned it gets a little tougher with age.
